Weekly Update: Progress at Oriel Myrddin
Last week saw a hive of activity across the Oriel Myrddin site, with significant progress made in both the King Street building and the Gallery. Here’s a quick rundown of the developments:
Further work was completed on the new flat roof at the King Street building, with insulation now installed. The rendering of the building’s exterior continued, to protect the new brickwork. Work on the ground-floor ceiling grid advanced following its installation last week. Weyrock flooring has been laid on the ground floor, and skirting has now been fitted. The radiators in the Gallery have been fitted to the wall.
The stone slabbing outside King Street is now complete, adding the finishing touch to the area.
The roof for the shed at 25 Spilman Street has been newly completed. To prepare for winter, the ducting has been weatherproofed to withstand the season’s challenges.
The Gallery’s flooring was lifted to allow for essential electrical work, as part of a complete re-installation of the mechanics and electrics. New rooflights arrived on-site and are being prepped for installation, a step that will enhance natural light in the Gallery space.
Decoration and prep work are underway across both the Gallery and King Street, being completed alongside the progress of individual sections.
With each passing week, the transformation of Oriel Myrddin edges closer to completion. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue re-developing this space into a new cultural quarter in Carmarthen.

Since renovations began in January, the transformation at Oriel Myrddin has been full steam ahead! Here are the latest highlights:
The external walls of the Gallery have been rendered, and in the King Street building, the kitchenette has been rendered and the upper floors skimmed. Ceilings in the learning centre have also been skimmed.
In the first-floor education space, the ceiling and chimney breast have been plasterboarded. At King Street, preparations for a new flat roof included cleaning the rear extension and building parapet walls. Groundwork has begun on the King Street alley, and blockwork for the lift shaft and lift pit is complete, ready for a new Gallery lift.
On King Street’s ground floor, the ceiling grid for the Gallery reception and café area is installed, and the roof space is fully insulated. New A/C units have been installed on the first floor, with ongoing ducting work to improve ventilation and help preserve the integrity of the building going forwards.
In the Gallery, new toilet facilities are underway, with flooring cut for plumbing access. The redundant gas main has been shut off. Flooring has been laid, skirting work is progressing in both buildings, and decorating is moving forward alongside completed sections.
Steel framework has been fitted above the Gallery and King Street entrance, while the King Street shop front has been stripped for rebuilding. The National Grid inspected the electrical connection, allowing us to strip old electrics and install a temporary connection. A full re-installation of mechanics and electrics is ongoing.
Progress continues each week as we get closer to unveiling a vibrant art and culture hub in Carmarthen. Stay tuned for more updates!

Could we glimpse a plan or drawing?

Oriel Myrddin is the main publicly funded art and craft Gallery for the South-West Wales region located in a listed Victorian building in the centre of Carmarthen. The Gallery is funded by Carmarthenshire County Council, The Arts Council of Wales and Carmarthen Town Council.
The current Gallery is owned by Carmarthen County Council and in December 2016 the authority purchased two vacant shops on King Street which back up to Oriel Myrddin, the reason was to further extend Oriel Myrddin into these shops to improve the visitor experience, create the context for a sustainable business and improve the scope for high quality output.
WB Griffiths & Son Ltd is the Lead contractor for this extensive renovation Project, with sub-contracting packaged and procured to local contractors.
Provisions for disabled access will be present the main aspect being a platform lift from the Café/Shop into Oriel Myrddin, this is required due to the difference in floor levels between the properties. A commercial store frontage along King Street will greatly enhance the viability of the proposed Café/Shop area and attract people to come in and discover the Art Gallery.
The existing Oriel Myrddin Art Gallery will mainly remain the same with only partial renovation taking Place, the most substantial work will be knocking through a section of rear wall to link 27 & 26 King Street with the Art Gallery which in turn creates a thoroughfare linking the art Gallery with King Street.
We will be providing weekly updates on this Project. Follow along to keep track of our progress!
